Maybe they were both imprisoned separately, but Greirat managed to escape and freed all other prisoners before he left and Patches happened to be among those. (The latter would be a long time before DS3. Greirat said he was quite notorious, so he probably was a thief for many years and had many heists. He could have been caught before but escaped.)
